BRIGHTEST MINDS APPOINTED TO LEAD USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Sydney (Tribune International, NSW Customer Services Release, 17 March 2021): Eleven industry experts have been appointed as inaugural members of the NSW Artificial Intelligence (AI) Advisory Committee and will play a leading role on how AI is utilised in the State.

Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said the panel will provide ongoing strategic advice on the use of AI to assist in decision-making and improving service delivery across the NSW Government.

“These experts have a wealth of experience that will help inform policy making and cement NSW’s position as an AI leader,” Mr Dominello said.

“I couldn’t have asked for a panel that was more qualified or experienced to determine the potential use of AI and the transformative impact it could have.

“AI is becoming more prevalent in our day-to-day life and the NSW Government is determined to lead the way in its use and to drive improvements wherever possible, while ensuring it’s done in an ethical way.”

NSW Chief Data Scientist, Dr Ian Oppermann, will chair the Committee. In addition to the core panel members, experts with knowledge in a particular area may be invited to contribute.

The committee is part of the NSW Government’s AI Strategy, the third pillar of its commitment to ensuring NSW is the digital capital of the Southern Hemisphere. It follows the launch of the Internet of Things and the Smart Infrastructure strategies.

Current examples of the use of AI in NSW Government include:

  • NSW Department of Planning, Industry & Environment use drones and AI to identify and protect threatened plants and animals which is part of the Saving our Species program.
  • NSW Health’s use of algorithms from deidentified medical records, to assist with the early detection and treatment of sepsis in emergency department waiting rooms, which helps to save patient lives and improve service levels.
  • Transport for NSW’s use of AI and machine learning to anticipate required maintenance and proactively schedule downtime for maintenance, which helps increase passenger safety and equipment reliability.

  • Fang Chen; Executive Director Data Science/Distinguished Professor at UTS, Sydney
  • Lee Hickin; National Technology Officer at Microsoft Australia
  • Aurelie Jacquet; Chief Legal and Data Ethics Officer at Innovations Accelerated, Chair of the committee representing Australia at the International standard on AI (AI ISO)
  • Peter Leonard; Principal at Data Synergies, Professor of Practice at UNSW Business School, Chair of the Australian IoT (Internet of Things) Alliance’s Data work stream, Chair of the Law Society of New South Wales Privacy and Data Committee, and the Australian Computer Society’s Artificial Intelligence and Ethics Technical Committee
  • Maria Milosavljevic; Inaugural Chief Data Officer for Services Australia
